Faithful. Flexible. Encouraging. Understanding. Amazing. Inspiring.
What word best describes today’s military spouses? Can a single word sum up the emotional roller coaster that ranges from the loneliness of deployment to the joy of that first kiss at a military homecoming? Is there any way to describe the enduring encouragement required on the home front so that our soldiers, Marines, sailors and airmen can carry out their orders without personal distractions?
No. There isn’t a word that captures the military spouse experience. But there are hundreds of photos that come pretty darn close.
May is National Military Appreciation Month and Friday, May 8 is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. This day recognizes the contributions of military spouses.
This month, MilitaryShoppers wants to showcase military spouses through its monthly photo contest. Added bonus:
This month’s photo contest winner will win $150!
Readers are encouraged to submit a photo that showcases military spouses. That could be you. That could be your mother, if you were a military brat. That could be your friend.
The photo could be from a military life highlight. Or a military event. Or it could be a simple photo inside your home right before a PCS. The choice is up to you.
In order to be eligible for this contest, entrants must submit a photo that showcases military spouses through this link and new registrants must check “yes, I would like to receive emails of offers, savings and contests for the military community.”
Already registered with MilitaryShoppers?
Use this link to enter the photo contest. Check your profile and make sure you have selected “Yes” on your profile where it asks if you “would like to receive coupons and special offers exclusively for military families via e-mail.”
One winner will be selected at the end of the month. The winning photo will be announced in June.

I am doing this in my wife’s name in hopes she will win. My name is Msg. Retired Kenneth Caincross. Words cannot express how much I appreciate her. On my first deployment she started the FRG when we had none and ran it like a trooper. Taking frantic calls from other wives at all hours of the night helping each and everyone deal with what ever issues came up. On my second deployment our home burnt down and we lost everything we had and almost lost our then 5 year old son when he went back in for his favorite cowboy boots and she didn’t hesitate to go in after him. She was his hero that day. Even after that she kept it together for the rest of my deployment and did what she always does took care of everyone else first. On my third deployment 6 months in, in a casual phone call I mentioned to her our Conex was lost at sea and they had been looking for it for several months and me and my soldiers had no cold weather gear and it was getting cold in Afghanistan at night. The next day miraculous we were issued brand new cold weather gear. Not to mention someone found our missing Conex in Canada. A few days later I found out all of this was because of my wife made a few phone calls asking why we had no cold weather gear and when she got no answers she walked straight into the adjutant general’s office and demanding to know why we didn’t have cold weather gear and where our missing Conex was and demanded someone fix the problem. She had started a congressional, but it took her less than 24 hours to make sure me and my soldiers had the gear we needed and the stolen Conex was located when no one else could get it done. Now that I am 100% disabled and medically retired she dedicates her time to taking care of me as well as being a mom and a housekeeper. I don’t know how she does it all but she is the most amazing woman I know and I am so blessed she is my wife.
