There have been a lot of changes to the shopping world over the last decade. The move from in-store shopping to an online mega shopping experience has made automated shopping more ideal. The ability to shop using a device has made life more convenient, easier, and clear-cut. You know the prices, the calculator on the app tells you the expected shipping costs if any, and it makes shopping clear and concise.
Self-Check-out
Maybe the convenience to shoppers wasn’t the reason for self-check-out additions in the stores. Self-check-out allows for the store to have one or two employees watching over multiple check-out areas. Some big stores have also added the convenience of using their app to scan items while shopping and then using the scanner at self-check-out to complete the check-out process. This level of convenience for the customer with these additions helps lessen moving items in and out of the cart, in addition to fewer people handling items for those who are trying to limit that.
Why Receipt Checking?
With all of the technology for checking out with scales for measuring the weight of each item as you put it into a bag, cameras at self-check-out and all over the stores, and with the addition of apps for self-check-out convenience, why the receipt checking? Big box stores like Costco and Sam’s Club have receipt check out on the way out whether there is a self-check-out or a traditional check-out. If those big box stores have this gap, it isn’t surprising that other stores have added this. But this adds another stop and another touchpoint for those who are trying to limit contact.
Company Policy
Per one store, the policy for checking every receipt is to catch and deter shoplifting, and they check every receipt on the way out and are not targeting any individuals. Another store said the reason they check the receipts to make sure that people are not overcharged, not because they are worried about their customers stealing.
Self-check-out is a convenience they many enjoy. It is frustrating when the scales go off saying the item isn’t placed on it – come on machine, its toilet paper it isn’t heavy – and sometimes it is slower than the regular check out, but it is convenient. Will receipt checking prevent you from using self-check-out or using certain stores?
James Cermenaro says
There should be more self-check-outs!
Judy Priest says
I love self checkout. It is quick and easy. I always go to self checkout.
Aubrey Ball says
The scanning process of self-help is okay however some people it’s better for the diffuse a cashier cost of scanners mess up sometime and we don’t know how to fix it and we need somebody there to assist
Ken Ploense says
Self check out contributes to loss of jobs. How will using self-check outs result in savings to me. I’m not getting paid to check out my own groceries.
Frank says
I am traditional at 72 years of age. However, if lower prices come about with automated check outs, I can adopt to the times. I want the cashiers to be assisted in finding another comparable position and pay as compared to “firing.”
Barbara p Casselman says
Cashier personal contact, plus my age not able to operate that equipment . Also need help empting shopping cart and with baggage
Linda D. says
I love using self check-out. Why? Quicker. Gives me opportunity to check price as I scan to avoid over charging (I can see prices up close & avoid checker from being upset sometimes when I see wrong price). Positive: I can bag my groceries to avoid squishing certain items. I can bag without over stuffing a bag or ensuring my bag isn’t heavy (possible ripping). Negative: might reduce jobs for checkers, however there’s usually 2 checkers to assist when needed at self check-out. ***** Cashier checkers will always be needed.
Margaret Lunt says
I do not now, nor do I ever want to use self check out!!
Mary says
I do not like self checkout. First it takes someones job away and second if I have to shop for my groceries, take them home and put them away I am not going to ring the up.
Conn Atkins says
I like the self checkout for the convenience. If I have a huge order though I do go to a regular check out person..
Nancy O'Neal says
I like self-check out. Wish that we could check out more than 15 items.
Karen Scott says
I hate self check out. I usually have coupons or store/credit card rewards. It’s very difficult to enter these credits. Plus I enjoy talking to the clerks. In 43 years of being around the military, I have never met an inefficient one.
Arlene Ehrenberger says
I want someone to wait on me. If these stores want me to work for them, then pay me and give me benefits. Plus, you are taking away a job from someone else.
I am old, I am retired, I want someone to do it for me now.
Peggy Jebavy says
I used the self-checkout at the commissary over the holidays when the checkers were a bit short. I had a horrible experience. Every time I scanned something it would tell me I didn’t put it in a bag. I had several of my own, which I told the computer. Almost every time I scanned an item, someone had to come reset something. It took forever and was very frustrating. I have used these before with little to no problem. I will not use the one at the commissary again!
Caryn Erdberg says
I don’t like self-checkout. I believe it takes jobs away from people that need them. Besides, I don’t save any money by using self checkout.
Arlene Carroll says
I do not use self check out nor willing ever. I do use drive up delivery and if self checkout is the only option in the store will use drive up and/or delivery. Even if it means boycotting that particular store
Paul says
I do not use self-check-out. Every time I have tried i end up needing assistance, it wont scan item, it doesn’t think it’s in the bag, even though it does not fit in the bag, will not take my cash, etc.
Barbara Bulger says
Unless a substantial discount, say one hour pay for the cashier, goes along with the use of self checkout, I will never use self checkout.
Marilyn Stancombe says
I support self-checkouts even though I seldom use them because I tend to make mistakes when doing so. My son and daughter regularly use self-checks and if they are with me they help me with the process.
I see others that quite adept at using the self-checkouts
William Anderson says
Let me get this straight. Self-checkout is supposed to be a convenience and faster than going through a cashier. And, it cuts down on the number of people touching our food. Plus, the stores can cut down on the number of cashiers.
Now the stores will be adding people for checking every receipt as we try to exit the store. Why? All I can see is a “Rube Goldberg” system. Which is worse than the original check-out system.
If I did go through the self-checkout and paid for my items. Now, I get stopped so someone can paw through my purchases to verify what I just paid for. That will be a real determent for me.
I stopped at Giant one morning to grab a few things. When I got to the front of the store there were no cashiers. Only Self-Checkout was available. I saw no one to help. So I just left my cart of groceries just sitting there and went to a Shurfine store.
Corporate doesn’t care about their customers. As long as the “Bean Counters” show a chart of increased profits possible. They elect to institute it. Ignoring the reason they are in business. That is to serve the Customer.
I saw this Receipt checking in progress at a Sam’s Club. What a mess. They could not see who was going through Self-checkout. So, they were stopping everyone. And going through the proof of purchase, your receipt, to make sure it was accurate
No Thanks. I would look for a different place to shop.
Patti Osteen says
I dont get paid to check myself out. So many times as a senior citizen these are to confusing and I need help. I buy on a monthly basics so self check outs are difficult. It takes to long and I don’t care for self check outs.
Kari Harmon says
It is nice and faster to do a self check out, but it is very frustrating when the machine is not working properly or it is down, and the cashier is slower than pits ants.
Mary says
I do my big shopping at the commissary after work, I’m tired, I don’t want check my groceries or take them out to my car, I wish they could unload at my house too. Don’t take away more jobs.
Carmen Raymundo says
No, I do not like it. I do not use it.
Narda J Young says
If the stores going to this way of checking out would lower the prices it might not be too bad. But people have ost their jobs over it nd prices continue to climb. Walmart is the biggest offender in this. No I don’t want to check myself out. I don’t get paid to do it in any way, shape or form!.
Samuel R Berry says
Opt out of self-checkout, generally because of having too many items. I also feel by doing the work myself I’m potentially putting someone out of a job
Donald P Van Buren says
I like self checkout because there are no lines. I do not like barcodes on most fruit and vegetables not working and requiring assistance. Having a “COSTCO” type receipt checker does not bother me.
william snyder says
I do not like self checkout lanes. Fine for a couple of items but not for grocery shopping. I enjoy the interaction with a real live person. If that is removed it becomes very in personal event. Some of the reasons people go out to shop, dinner etc is to have human interaction as it is part of life. Same thing at work, working at home is nice but you start to miss the normal interaction you have with people.
Raoul Dionne says
i prefer self checkout. unfortunately many of the units are frequently out of service.
another helpful option is self bagging
Genevieve Youraine says
I normally shop once or twice a month at the commissary and my basket is usually full when I finish. I am 87 years old so I really prefer a cashier check out even if I have to wait.
richard hesseling says
no to self checkout
Mark O says
I will not use the Self Check Out unless I get a discount (I’m saving them money and taking a job) or get paid and a W-2 (Because I’m working for them as a checker).
Margaret. Kempfer says
I do-not like self checkout! To me it’s just as time consuming as waiting in line to checkout with the cashier. Reading the screen each time you have produce to weigh, picking items back up because they weren’t scanned correctly, bagging them yourself, listening to the screen telling you to put the item in a bag (when it’s too big) or that it needs yo be rescanned or see an attendant for help. A real PAIN!
Kristie Riley says
I love the self check-out when I have a few items and I’m trying to get in and get out. I hate it when people with a full cart use the lane. They slow up the purpose of the self check-out (to move people in and out rapidly) and they over load the weight scales. The self check-out is NOT designed to try to hold more than about 5-6 bags. Also, when people use the self check-out for big shopping trips, the cashiers and baggers are no longer being utilized. Therefore, the will lose their jobs/hours and we will be doing the job they were hired to perform. So if you like your commissary, you may not want to treat it like the local Wal-mart. Keep the self check-out lanes available for the small purchases and remember-your soldiers need that lane to be available when they are rushing through to get lunch.
Phillip Mitchell says
I use self check out when shopping for one or two items. I do not use for major shopping due to age and limited mobility.
Teresa R Sumner says
I Do NOT like the self checkout ideal. For some of us older people it doesn’t work. I already had a bad experience at Walmart trying to use the self check out. I didn’t know how they weighed the bananas and I had to get assistance and the gal was really rude about trying to show me. Please don’t go this route.
valdemar jensen says
Self-Check-out this was to be for the 10 items or less, get in get out, not the mega cart full. Also for the store to need less employees or checkers at a stand
Fewer people handling items, Lets see packed ,shipped, unloaded, stocked to shelf, re-stocked on shelf, put in cart, then how many times has it been touched while on the shelf, what’s one more touch.
Why Receipt Checking; some people are just bad no matter the reason even with checking some get away with it, i am ok with Receipt Checking. this thing that people are not overcharged; 84 items I had and i am sure the lady did not know the price of each item she was only looking to see if the receipt count match what was in the bags. but said it as to see if i was over charged. B.S.

Fast and easy
James A. Riley says
I am an AF Retiree and I never use self checkout. If a store requires it, I usually just leave and find a store which provides checkout services. However, I am not averse to packing and carrying out my groceries. James

Sandra Sikes says
Being a senior citizen it is difficult to self checkout and bag my own items. This said I prefer human contact. If I have a question about the price not ringing up they can check it for me or call for help. My self checkout experience has been wait for associate the wait for checking which seems to take forever. Then there is receipt going out the door. Way to much trouble. Finally if I wanted to bag my own stuff why do I keep paying higher prices and doing the work for no pay. Just my thoughts.
