White House Nixes Support Proposal for Low-Income Military Families

07/30/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Approximately 20,000 or more military families currently use SNAP or WIC to help feed their families. Now, President Donald Trump wants to further cut these programs in 2020. At the same time, Trump has also refused to support measures that would provide additional food security protections for military families.

Trump is proposing changes to how the income qualifying threshold is calculated, in addition to adding employment requirements. This could result in an estimated 3.1 million Americans losing access to SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Among those losing access: thousands of military families.

White House Nixes Support Proposal for Low-Income Military Families

According to a 2016 Government Accountability Office report, more than 23,000 active-duty troops used SNAP, once known as food stamps, in 2013.

Actually qualifying for assistance is complicated by the income requirements, which currently include BAH to determine household income. Military advocate Erika Tebbens understands this exact issue.

“When they told me I didn’t qualify because they were counting our housing allowance as part of our earned income, all I remember was just sobbing,” Tebbens recalls.

This issue isn’t uncommon, according to Josh Protas, vice president of public policy for MAZON: a Jewish Response to Hunger. For most federal assistance programs, a service member’s BAH isn’t treated as income. That changes for SNAP, which includes BAH in its calculations.

These calculations, along with Trump’s proposed SNAP changes, put SNAP access for troops at risk.

Trump Refuses To Support, Acknowledge Food Insecurity for Military Families

Tebbens along with other military food security advocates, like Protas, have pushed for a military clause addressing food insecurity. It’s currently included in the House version of the 2020 defense policy bill.

This proposal would provide an allowance for military families equal to 130% of the federal poverty guidelines minus the service member’s gross income. It doesn’t include allowances, like BAH, in the gross income calculations.

According to a recent Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimate, approximately 10,000 military families qualify for a proposed measure to address food insecurity.

Over four years, from 2021 through 2024, this would cost a total of $175 million. The current proposal covers only 2020 at a cost of $15 million.

Trump disagrees that military troops should need SNAP benefits, or other food insecurity support, at all.

In a July 9 statement, the White House “strongly objected” to the proposal since troops “receive appropriate compensation already.”

“Most junior enlisted members receive pay that is between the 95th and 99th percentiles relative to their private-sector peers,” the Office of Management and Budget asserted in a statement regarding the proposed provision.

Do Troops Receive Adequate Compensation?

An E-4 service member and family living in San Diego, a major military hub with a historically high cost of living, brings in about $5,270 per month. Almost half of that amount is BAH.

An NBC News report noted that at San Diego-area food trucks, many of the dozens lining up to receive food were military spouses.

Currently, San Diego cost of living is approximately 144% of the US average, making this duty station more expensive than many others. Other major military installations, like the DC-region, Alaska and Hawaii, all rank at higher than the average cost of living.

Even school-aged children are experiencing widespread food insecurity. A DoD report noted that 6,500 students at DoDEA schools nationwide were eligible for free or reduced lunch. This number accounts for about 1/3 of all DoDEA students. It doesn’t account for military-connected children enrolled at local public schools.

Given these statistics and anecdotal reports, budgets are likely tight for junior enlisted and even commissioned troops with families.

“Younger enlisted service members with large households are disqualified from getting the help they need from SNAP when their BAH gets treated as income,” Protas explained.

Ongoing Food Insecurity Concerns for Military Families

This issue previously garnered the spotlight in 2017 amind the last government shutdown. Some troops were not paid or had delayed paychecks, leading to gaps in income.

These stretched and limited incomes caused many military families to use food banks and other food security support services in their areas.

“There’s nothing wrong with turning to a food pantry for emergency assistance in time of need, but there’s no reason those serving in our armed forces should have to do so on a regular basis,” Protas said.

With the Trump administration’s proposed changes to SNAP, more military families may soon be turning to food banks as a means of keeping food on the table.

“While I never expected to be flush with cash as a military spouse, I always assumed, perhaps naively, when my husband joined that we would always have our basic needs met,” Tebbens commented.

Do you think military troops should include BAH in gross income when applying for SNAP or other food insecurity supports? Sound off in the comments!

Do Active Duty Troops Need a Tourist Passport?

07/11/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Your military CAC is your life. It gets you into your shop, through the commissary and to medical for some Motrin.

Everything you’ve needed to do is handled by that one card. But now, you’d like to travel or maybe you’ve got an OCONUS tour in the works. Will your CAC get you onto the plane or train?

Do Active Duty Troops Need a Tourist Passport?

Short answer: everyone needs a passport for international travel. Generally, except for a few circumstances, passports are required to leave the US. Yes, that includes on cruises and jaunts just over the border to Canada or Mexico.

So, yes, even active duty troops do need a US Passport (or passport from their home nation) to travel around the world.

However, there are some instances that do not require a tourist passport for active duty troops.

  • OCONUS PCS
  • CONUS to OCONUS TDY
  • OCONUS to OCONUS TDY
  • Deployment, to and from deployment location
  • Other official travel

Some Tourist Passport Exceptions

Under these very specific circumstances, active duty troops are not required to have a valid, current passport. That’s because you’ll be on official military business.

For travel to, from or around OCONUS locations on orders, you’ll need a copy of those specific orders and your CAC card. Make sure that your orders specify where you’re going to and from, the dates you’ll be traveling and have your personal information on them. You’ll be showing these documents to customs and immigration at your OCONUS destination, if traveling by commercial air.

If you’re PCSing to or from an OCONUS location, you’ll need to bring a copy of those orders, your CAC and your area clearance. For travel with dependents, they’ll need to be listed on your area clearance and orders, too.

Your family might be authorized “official” or no-fee passports. These are just for travel on orders to and from your next duty station(s). Even though they look the same, you aren’t really supposed to conduct personal travel with these special passports.

On deployment, you might be flying on a military-provided flight or via commercial airlines. But the same rule applies: copy of your orders and your CAC. That’s it. Yes, even if you’re coming and going from R & R and even if you’re IAD.

There might be other reasons for your official travel. Most will simply require your CAC and a copy of orders.

Times Active Duty Troops Will Want a Tourist Passport

Say you’re a service member and you’d like to go on vacation…

If you’re going outside of the US, you’ll need a passport. 100% and all the time for personal tourist travel. That’s it.

Applying for a passport is fairly quick and easy. There’s a handy online questionnaire that will guide you to the correct form and let you know all the fees upfront. All you’ll need to do is fill in the online application and make an appointment at your nearest passport office.

Some military bases might be able to help you process tourist passport applications, but often you’ll need to visit a federal passport office yourself.

Important Passport & Travel Reminders

Getting a passport is fairly simple, but there are important things that everyone should know before they go.

  • Minor children need to have consent from both/all custodial parents or guardians; consent can be shown via additional forms for parents unable to appear in person
  • You passport and your booking information should match, down to the middle name or middle initial; especially important for newlyweds or other name changes
  • Passports can take 6-8 weeks between application and arrival at your door; plan your trip with this in mind

There are also special concerns for military troops and families.

  • Foreign travel must be approved by your chain of command, with requirements and training varying by location or unit; see your CO or authorized unit member for guidance
  • Some locations may be considered off-limits to troops; always check with your command and monitor the travel advisories issued by the State Department
  • When traveling to/from your OCONUS duty station, military families should always carry a copy of orders, area clearance, a DoD ID and have a valid multiple entry stamp in their tourist passport

Passport + DoD ID Perks

When traveling, you might also want to consider bringing along your military ID, even though you’ve also got a passport. There are definitely some travel perks that could apply!

Some US airlines allow military troops and veterans, with ID, to board the plane first. Others allow complimentary additional baggage, even when you’re not traveling on orders! And sometimes, just sometimes, you might even score a small (or big) upgrade. Some troops traveling, both on orders and for personal reasons, report that they’ve scored class upgrades or been placed in seats with extra legroom.

Having your ID with you at check-in could also score you passage through the coveted TSA Pre-Check line! You’ll cut tons of time off your security clearance and be able to keep your shoes on.

What had you heard about passports for AD troops? We’d love to hear your best scuttlebutt!

Resources to Plan Your Military Wedding with Ease

07/09/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Before you pop the question or say “I do” there are a few boxes that need to be checked for couples in the military.

There’s lots to tackle before you get to the altar (or courthouse, if we’re being honest). It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but it’s all 100% possible and totally doable.

Resources to Plan Your Military Wedding with Ease

Congrats! You’re and your partner are about to enter an exciting and hectic time in your relationship: wedding planning. Oh, and you’ll get to do it on the US military’s schedule. Which makes it super fun and wonderful.

Before You Pop the Question

There are no rules about who military troops may marry. Marry the person you love. Same sex marriage is legal and recognized across the country.

However, there are some small caveats at play.

First, students at service academies must graduate and get commissioned or leave the academy before marriage. So wait until after one of those two life events, and you’re golden.

Also, there are rules about fraternization, meaning crossing rank barriers. For example, an officer and an enlisted member cannot get married. However, if two people of equal enlisted rank do so and one partner later gets commissioned, they are grandfathered in and the relationship is totally fine.

Just make sure you’re not in either of those two categories before you ask your partner to get hitched.

Planning Your Big Day

You might picture a sword arch or cutting the cake with a saber. Maybe you’d like you or your spouse-to-be to wear dress uniforms. Perhaps you think it’s a rule to follow these traditions.

Great news: your wedding is still 100% yours. No need to risk cake on dress blues or eat cake off a sword. You do you.

In the process of planning your wedding day, there are tons of resources you can access that can make the process easier and cheaper:

  • Base Chaplains: military chaplains of all denominations can provide pre-marital and marriage counseling at no cost to you. You can also often rent out the base chapel for free – and book a minister into the deal. There is a suggested donation, but even that will be less expensive than renting a civilian church.
  • MFLC: contact your local Military Family Life Counselor for individual or joint marriage counseling. This is a judgement-free zone to explore your relationship and the impact of military service with a trained counselor.
  • Use Uniforms: its fancy clothes you or your partner already own, so use it! Ask military friends in your wedding party or on the invitation to feel free to wear their best military uniforms, too. Just be sure everyone in the wedding party is wearing the same uniform in terms of formality, even across branches of service.

You might also want to consider getting wedding insurance. The military’s missions don’t stop for your big day. Which means that short-notice deployments, TDY trips and other unexpected events can derail your careful planning. Having insurance can help you to recoup some of those losses.

Another way to get around the military’s schedule is to get married on short notice. Contact the chaplain, local churches and justices of the peace to learn about last minute cancellations or openings. You can do the same with reception venues in your desired location, too. Often you can score a good deal by picking up someone else’s cancellation.

If you’re inviting other military members to your wedding, you might want to consider how to address the invitations and arrange seating. You can skip all of this if the military aspect isn’t factoring into your big day. For more formal or military-focused events, consider addressing invitations with military rank (Staff Sergeant and Mr. Smith) and seat guests by rank. Contact your base or unit protocol officer for assistance.

After You’re Hitched

Congrats! You did it! Now you’ve got to handle all the paperwork of getting married.

If you are changing a last name, you’ll need to:

  • Update your SSN
  • Get a new driver’s license
  • Apply for a new passport
  • Update bank, insurance and other name-associated accounts
  • Double check other important life documents and rules

For every new military spouse (and sponsor!), you’ll need to:

  • Enroll in DEERS
  • Get an official dependent ID card
  • Update SGLI to include the new spouse as the recipient
  • Update chain of command with the spouse’s new next of kin and contact information
  • Update the military member’s paperwork and file to reflect marital status, next of kin and contact information
  • Obtain blanket and special power of attorney documents to provide access to accounts and services when the military member is away
  • Memorize the military member’s SSN – it’s used for literally everything

All of these name changes and updates can take time, so don’t book your honeymoon in your new married last name. Your booking does need to match your passport or other identifying documents.

Also, make sure you’ve double checked the military member’s leave status and deployment schedule before you book any big trips. Many military couples delay their honeymoon to accommodate the mission.

What questions do you have about getting married as a military member or becoming a military spouse? We’d love to point you in the right direction!

What’s Happening with the Military Housing Bill of Rights?

07/02/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Since early 2019, all the chatter has been about the horrors of privatized military housing. The mold, the falling down homes and the resulting illnesses or injuries to troops and their families.

After the Congressional hearing and promises of new “resident bill of rights” in the works, it seems that some of the focus has shifted.

What’s Happening with the Military Housing Bill of Rights

There’s been a lot of action and many promises made over the last six months.

Tenants Bill of Rights

In March, DoD officials and lawmakers promised that on-base residents would be involved in the creation of a “resident bill of rights.” This new document is meant to provide a layer of protection for tenants in privatized housing.

As of June 11, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Sustainment Robert McMahon stated that he intended to deliver an initial draft to residents by June 14 at the latest. On-base residents should have received an online survey from CEL and Associates via email. One survey per household will be provided.

As of publication, all on-base households should have received their surveys. If you have not yet received yours or are having issues with it, please call the toll-free helpline at (800)-482-6431, or contact CEL & Associates, Inc. via email at BillofRightsFeedback@celassociates.com

On-Base Residents Get More Housing Rights

The new bill of rights is intended to hold privatized housing management companies more accountable. Residents across services and around the US have been aware of issues relating to poor management and maintenance for many years. Everything came to a head at February 2019’s Congressional hearings, when military spouses detailed the impact and seriousness of their concerns.

As a result of this testimony and firsthand visits to crumbling military housing, Congress and DoD leadership proposed the collaborative bill of rights in order to hold housing management companies accountable.

Tentative inclusions for the proposed bill of rights includes:

  • right to withhold rent through a neutral party until concerns are addressed
  • housing advocates on military installations
  • right to a healthy home and community
  • effective communication tools between the landlord (management company representatives), maintenance staff and tenants
  • a process to handle disputes, mediation and arbitration
  • protection from reprisals should tenants involve their chain of command or other military housing staff
  • property maintenance that meets or exceeds industry standards, performed by a professional

“We’re moving forward in a way that will quickly enhance the experience our military members are having on installations in family housing, and we’re doing it in a way they know there are people who care. If they have an issue we’re going to be responsive and they’re going to have a voice,” McMahon said June 11 at a meeting with more than 500 representatives from military communities.

What Housing Companies are Already Doing

Military housing companies are already starting to make changes. While most management companies do not make connections between this new programs and initiatives, changes have been made following the Congressional hearings and increased scrutiny by political and DoD leaders.

  • Balfour-Beatty: On May 14, Balfour-Beatty announced an upgraded resident portal to improve communication and request maintenance services. Residents can access this portal via a website or app.
  • Lincoln Military Housing: On May 30, Lincoln unveiled their new app for residents. This will enable residents to request and track maintenance requests from anywhere in the world, 24/7.
  • Corvias: As of April 13, Corvias had provided additional customer service and support training to employees across all 13 of their military housing communities.
  • Winn: As of June 25, Winn had not announced any new customer service or support initiatives for their military communities.
  • Hunt: As of June 25, Hunt has not announced any new customer service or support initiatives. However, they do already offer a 24/7 online service and maintenance portal for residents to submit requests.

Help On the Way for OCONUS, Barracks Housing

While McMahon acknowledged at the June 11 meeting that the DoD’s focus is on the privatized housing communities, they are also aware of issues concerning housing for single troops in barracks and families living overseas.

“We can’t forget about those living overseas in government housing, those living in dormitories and barracks… housing for single members, and we certainly can’t forget about those living in communities. They have rights and responsibilities as well. We have to take a broader perspective than where we are right now,” he said.

Right now, the DoD and housing management companies will be working to create and implement the tenant bill of rights stateside. Following the survey received by on-base households in June, there should be a review process before proceeding to finalizing the complete document.

As military communities roll out and implement the bill of rights in the US, the DoD will be pivoting to assist military troops living in the barracks and families living on base OCONUS.

“We’re going to do it sequentially,” he explained. “We’re focused right now on those that living in privatized housing on installations.”

Make the Most of Fresh Produce

06/10/2019 By Meg Flanagan

I’m a chronic over-buyer of produce. When walking the aisles of the grocery store or browsing the farmer’s market, the fresh veggies and ultra-ripe fruits practically beg me to add them to my basket. I can almost taste the amazing meals and snacks I could enjoy – if only I would buy the produce.

And so I give in. I buy all the fruits and veggies.

Make the Most of Fresh Produce

However, once we get home, I hit a snag. Inevitably, I’ve bought more than we can possibly eat – even with two very hungry kids, a Marine and an avid runner at home. Every single week, something goes to waste. This bothers me immensely.

As part of my big quest to be more eco-friendly, on a military budget, I’ve found tons of ways to make the most of fresh produce!

Eat Veggies at Every Meal

So, you’ve arrived home with all the veggies. Only, now, you’re not quite sure what to do with all of them. Great news: veggies are versatile and super easy to switch up into different meals.

Here are some of my favorite veggies + all the different ways I like to eat them to minimize waste.

  • Avocado: mashed into guacamole or as a spread, straight from the peel, cubed for salads, tacos or sandwiches, smoothies
  • Carrots: raw for dips and salads, steamed, baked into “fries,” baked with brown sugar and nuts, added to soups
  • Asparagus: steamed, baked, grilled, chopped raw for salads, use leftovers as pizza toppings, mixed into pasta, added to soups
  • Spinach: salad, sandwich toppings, sautéed, steamed or added to soups, smoothies
  • Fennel: thin sliced and caramelized, used as a base for blended soups, sliced and grilled, sautéed, shaved raw for salads
  • Eggplant: grilled, baked, made into baba ganoush, seasoned and baked, added to lasagna, added to soups
  • Green Beans: eaten raw, sautéed, steamed, grilled, baked, added to soups, added to quiche, added to salads
  • Zucchini: eaten raw, added to lasagna, in pasta dishes, sautéed, steamed, grilled, baked, added to salads, as part of a vegetarian sandwich, baked into bread
  • Tomatoes: sliced raw with salt, for tomato soup, added to soups, added to salads, as a vegetarian sandwich, made into a sauce, added to pasta

What To Do With All Your Fruit

When peach season hits, I’m a full on sucker. Ditto for berry season and apple season. Again, what to do with all that beautiful fruit though?

Here are my favorite, sometimes surprising, ways I like to use all my sweet treats!

  • Salads: add berries, pomegranates, apples, pears
  • Sandwiches: thinly sliced apples or pears, chopped grapes, caramelized peaches or apricots
  • Appetizers: add melon balls, sliced applies, firm stone fruit, grapes and berries to a meat, cheese and bread platter
  • Salsa: mango, pineapple, peach
  • Grilled: peaches and other stone fruit, pineapple, mangoes
  • Dessert: blended into smoothie popsicles, in a pie, cake toppings, in sweet quick bread, with shortcake and whipped cream, drizzled with honey, with ice cream or even just plain

Another great way to use up fruits, and veggies, is in a yummy smoothie! Add a few of your favorite fruits – bananas, stone fruits, pineapple and berries work well. Then, splash in your liquid of choice, like milk, water, coconut water or fruit juice. If you’re trying to boost the health value, consider adding leafy greens, avocado or other veggies. To make it cold, add some ice. Blend and enjoy!

Learn How to Freeze Produce

When you can’t quite use it all up before your produce spoils, turn to your freezer!

With a little bit of work, you can freeze pretty much any type of produce. When freezing, you’re going to want to use freezer-safe storage options, like zipper-locking bags or reusable containers. Fill your container or bag to the top and remove as much air as possible. Remember to date your frozen produce!

Here’s my cheat sheet:

  • Fruit: slice up bananas, pineapple, stone fruit; leave berries loose; place in a single layer on a wax paper lined cookie sheet; freeze until firm then transfer into a container
  • Apples & Pears: slice and then dip into a lemon/water mix – 1qt water _ 1tbs lemon juice; dry then freeze
  • Most Veggies: blanch or quickly drop into boiling water before transferring to ice cold water
  • Tomato Sauce: cook according to the recipe, cool and then freeze
  • Soup: cook according to the recipe, cool and then freeze
  • Lasagna: cook according to the recipe, cool and then freeze

Make Friends with Meal Planning & Prepping

One easy way to make the most of your produce is to make a plan and stick to it when you shop. When I over-buy, it’s because I fell victim to impulse purchases.

Once I realized this pattern, I committed to meal planning. Every week, I map out exactly what we’ll be eating. I check the pantry and freezer for staples. Then, I make my shopping list – breaking down exactly how much of each ingredient I’ll need for every recipe.

Use Up Leftovers

Even with careful prepping and planning, I end up with leftovers. It’s either full-on leftover meals or cooked ingredients, like baked potatoes or chopped carrots.

For full meals, I’ll divvy them up into lunches or freeze them for reheating later.

Those individually cooked veggies can be added to pasta, soups, sauces, quiche, salads. My kids love using leftover potatoes as hash browns or as filler for a pot pie!

How do you make the most of your fresh produce? We’d love to check out your recipes or tips!

Why I’m Dropping Out of the Hustle

05/30/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Over the last decade, I feel like I’ve been constantly searching and seeking. Not really for a place to fit in or friends – that’s actually been fairly easy. No, I’ve been job hunting for essentially 10 years. Or, if I’m not on the hunt, I’m hustling hard for my small business as an education consultant.

Frankly, I’m tired of the hunt and hustle routine. It’s flat out exhausting. And I’m ready to step back for a minute.

Why I’m Dropping Out of the Hustle

See, I started this military life as a new college graduate. I’d spent the previous 22 years of life planning my future: go to college, get a degree, find a job, get married, have kids and eventually retire. Somewhere along the way, that plan got hijacked. There wasn’t a clear shot from college to job.

Now, I don’t want you to think I’m complaining. I love this life, but it’s not what I planned. And adjusting has taken me, well, a decade.

At that first duty station, I jumped into a job that was semi-related, tangentially, kind of, maybe – okay, not at all. It was a nanny job, not a teaching job. But I snagged it up because I needed to do something, anything to fill my need to contribute to the family financially. Yes, even if it didn’t make me happy or added extra stress.

Constantly On The Hunt For Opportunity

Even while I was in the job, I was looking for the next thing, a job or an opportunity. This pattern just kept on repeating with every PCS: jump into a job, feel dissatisfied, keep looking for the next best thing out there – all while prepping to PCS in the back of my mind.

I hopped into jobs without ever giving myself a chance to really settle in or adjust. Instead of taking the time to actually finish the PCS, I was job hunting the second we got orders.

Being constantly on the hunt got really old. So I thought I’d switch things up and go into business for myself.

Different Title, Same Old Hustle

Starting my own business seemed like a great idea. I enrolled in courses, joined Facebook groups and tracked the big names. Everything in an attempt to learn how to do things “right” in the social media age. This was a different kind of business climate than when I had operated my tutoring business years earlier.

I tried, I really tried, to do all the things. Social media channels were up and running. I ran a blog with relevant, click-baity topics relevant to my target audience. Later, I added services and products.

But I was running myself ragged trying to do it all, to fit the mold, to hit the mark. It just wasn’t authentic and it was too much. I was constantly on the run, trying to find the next best way to do things.

At one point, I was on vacation in Bangkok with my kids and husband. Yes, we saw incredible and amazing things. But early mornings and late nights were spent creating social media content or another blog post, answering emails or networking. I was on vacation – except I was still working.

Which was exactly the opposite of my goal when starting by own business. I did this to escape the 24/7 work cycle of teaching.

Changing My Story of Hunt & Hustle

We just got orders again and I caught myself slipping back into my old habits of job hunting and hustling for my business. The stress was building and I started to wonder if running my life, this one shining opportunity for happiness, on someone else’s plans or even ceaselessly was worth it.

Was it valuable to spend my last moments in this location hustling? Did I need the stress of trying to coordinate a job with a house with good schools and a decent commute?

Short answer: No. Running myself ragged, either to fulfill my own business venture or someone else’s organization, is not worth it.

And so I’m done.

I’m done chasing someone else’s dreams, or even my own ventures, at the expense of my sanity and precious time with my family. From here on out, I’m doing what makes me happy, fulfilled and passionate.

So I’m going to write more, for organizations I love and with editors who support me. I’ll be running my business on my schedule, committing only to projects, products and engagement opportunities that I enjoy. And I’ll be continuing to feed my editorial side with content management work that makes me incredibly happy.

All of it will be on my schedule, as a busy mom of two who makes family the number one priority. I love the work I am lucky enough to do: helping writers build their craft, working with families to find success at school and working on my own writing.

And I’m not stopping, but I am going to make balancing work and life more important. It’s pure luck that military life, the same life that disrupted my career plans, grants me this chance to be so incredibly flexible for my family.

No more endless job hunts. There’s finally an end to the non-stop hustle of entrepreneurship. Whatever I do now or next, it’s all going to be on my terms.

How has military life changed your plans? We’d love to hear your story! Tell us how you’re balancing your military life with family and work.

Stop the endless litany of “I’m hungry” this summer with quick and easy snacks that are super kid friendly!

Swing into your local commissary to snag these yummy summer snacks.

Easy Kid-Friendly Quick Summer Snacks from the Commissary

My kids are always starving. Yes, even if they literally just ate moments before. Which means that my fridge and pantry are 100% fully stocked with easy things to nibble.

Right now, I’m focusing on snacks that are healthy, fresh and have minimal packaging. These are easy to bulk-prep and keep in reusable take-and-toss containers for quick access.

Fresh Fruit Snacks

Fruit makes such a great snack. It’s quick, easy and healthy! Plus, you can buy everything at the commissary.

  • Grapes: pre-wash and portion out into reusable take-and-toss containers for each access
  • Pineapple: cut into bite-sized chunks and then freeze by laying in a single layer on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper; once frozen, pop into a freezer safe container for storage
  • Apples: buy kid-sized smaller apples to cut waste and up the shelf appeal
  • Oranges: your kids will love peeling their own clementines
  • Fruit Salad: mix up several types of your kids’ favorite fruit into a container; serve with dollops of Greek yogurt, swirls of honey and a sprinkle of coconut flakes
  • Berries: rinse clean and then portion out into single-serve containers
  • Bananas: the original peel-and-eat snack

What are your kids’ favorite healthy fruit snacks?

Eat Your Veggies, Kids

Squeeze in an extra serving of veggies by making it easy for your kids! Pre-slicing and serving with a yummy dip makes it more appealing.

  • Cukes: peel and slice cucumbers into spears or rounds, store in take-and-toss reusable containers; dip into ranch or hummus
  • Carrots: peel and slice into carrot sticks; serve with ranch, hummus or peanut butter
  • Cherry Tomatoes: pre-wash and sort into single-serving containers

  • Broccoli: cut up these mini trees and serve with your favorite salad dressing

I’d love to steal some of your best tricks to sneak more veggies into my kids’ snacks!

Easy Fridge Snacks

My kids constantly root through the fridge for something to eat. They’re such yogurt hounds! But I’ve thought beyond the dairy aisle with these easy fridge snacks!

What’s in your fridge? I’m always on the hunt for new kid-friendly snacks!

Quick Pantry Staples

When everything else fails, we turn to the pantry for a quick snack that’s also shelf-stable. I love to stock up at the commissary’s bulk sidewalk sales!

  • Popcorn: keep whole kernels or the microwave packets on hand for an easy, fast snack
  • Nuts: DIY your own yummy mix or keep it to single varieties
  • Cereal: we love cereal in big pieces, like Cheerios or Chex, that are easy to pop
  • Pita Chips: yummy dipped in hummus or Greek yogurt-based dips
  • Salsa: keep this on your shelf to add to other snacks, like veggies or pita chips
  • Granola: snack on this alone or add to yogurt
  • Canned Fruit: drain the syrup, serve topped with yogurt or granola
  • Raisins: eat alone or add to other snacks, like as a topping for celery sticks with peanut butter
  • Dried Fruit: snack on these for an energy-packed snack

We love to keep these snacks on hand, just in case we need something for a long car trip or spur-of-the-moment beach trip!

Freezer-Friendly Snacks

Keep it cold in the summer with frozen treats! We love to enjoy these snacks on really hot days.

  • Frozen Berries: put frozen berries into a cup and eat solo or mix into yogurt
  • Smoothie Popsicles: DIY your own frozen treat, blend fruit, yogurt or water for a custom creation

Little Ways to Save Your Sanity This Summer

05/21/2019 By Meg Flanagan

Look, I love summer as much as the next person. But I’m also super busy all year round with work, life and my kids. It’s just that, well, in summer the lines between life, work and kids blurs a whole lot more. Since we’re adding in a PCS this summer, life’s about to get insanely logistically crazy.

Little Ways to Save Your Sanity This Summer

What I’m trying to say is that I’m searching for any little (or big) ways to save my sanity this summer. Since I’m just a bit into research, I’ve deep dived into this and I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with you!

Invest in Child Care

If you don’t have kids, please skip this section or file it away for a time when you do need it.

Got kids? This is for you!

As a busy mom of two under 5 who also works from home, I know the struggle of trying to do it all while also making memories. The reality is that it’s almost impossible to do both perfectly all the time. I also don’t want to stop the fun times for my kids because I’ve got deadlines and projects.

Instead, I’m investing in child care! Here are some options you can try that won’t break the bank:

  • Child Care Swaps: find a group of parents that you like and trust, then swap play date duties! Keep the kids at your house for a few hours while the other parents get things done. Then, another parent can take over the next time. It’s free, other than sharing some snacks!
  • Parents’ Helper: help a young teen or tween gain babysitting skills this summer! Your kids will love having a fun, older kids to play with. You’ll love getting some work done around the house for less than a normal babysitting rate.
  • Busy Bins: setting up an independent play center is ideal for older toddlers and preschoolers! It’s not a babysitter, but having activities that require minimal adult assistance is crucial when you need to take a minute for yourself.

Say Yes to Deliveries

If I can get everything I need without having to drag my children along to a store, then I want in on that service. Right now, we’re living in the golden age of delivery services for literally everything.

This summer, I’ll be getting these types of items delivered:

  • Groceries: from in-house options like Peapod to pick-your-store choices like Instacart, it’s almost too easy to not shop in-person anymore. If delivery isn’t your jam, I’m also loving the virtual cart feature many grocery stores are adding. Shop the store from anywhere, pay and schedule pickup when it suits your schedule!
  • Meal Kits: if you’re tired of collecting random full size ingredients for a one-off recipe, meal kits are for you! Perfectly portioned ingredients, with just enough for the recipe you’re making. There are options for literally every single diet and taste: vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, Keto, Paleo and even kids!
  • Subscription Boxes: getting a regular stock of useful items is way cool. I’m the first to admit that I’m stuck in my ways, so having a subscription box that injects new options into my routines is perfect. From books to fitness gear, snacks to dog toys, there’s a box to fit your interest.
  • Household Essentials: skip the mad dash to the store the next time you run out of toilet paper by never running out again! Set up auto-delivery of your household essentials with Amazon Prime or a similar service. We currently use it for diapers, wipes and household cleaners.

Keep Things Tidy

Whether you’re looking to tidy up your yard or your house, outsourcing these tasks can 100% save your sanity over the summer. I know we’ll certainly be investing during this crazy PCS.

  • Cleaning Services: from a one-time deep clean to regular service, investing in housecleaning is crucial to keeping things running. Get your new house shipshape after you unpack, deep clean the beach sand out of the nooks and crannies or make sure the bathrooms are always clean. Trust me, it’s worth it!
  • Professional Organizer: it’s always a struggle to fit everything we own into each new house. Every floor plan is very different, which makes it hard to build just one system. Instead of fighting it, I’m embracing professional organization services like Modified by Melissa – offered by a military spouse!
  • Lawn Care Services: no one likes weeds in the flowers or an unkept lawn. You can invest in a professional, all-inclusive regular service or hire the teen down the street. Either way, weeds you aren’t pulling is worth every penny.

Easy Summer Fun

Ultimately, summer is a time for fun. And there are tons of easy ways, especially for military families, to really enjoy every second of summer vacation!

  • Blue Star Museums: coast-to-coast, museums are opening their doors to military families – for free! From children’s museums to botanical gardens, you can find a great place to visit for the day.
  • On-Base Pool: when the summer gets hot, it’s time to hop into the pool on-base. Many pools offer toddler splash pad or tiny tot pools as well as places to swim laps or dive.
  • Digital Library: grab the latest releases for kids and adults, for free, when you use your branch’s digital library service! Sign up is super simple. Just ask at your local base library.
  • Theme Parks Nationwide: many theme parks, like Disney and Sea World, offer discounts or complimentary tickets to military families!
