Supporting healthy choices
DeCA program of highlighting ‘Better for You’ foods
to begin in the Fort Meade Commissary grocery section
By Rick Brink,
DeCA public affairs specialist

FORT LEE, Va. – What does it take to make commissary shopping easier for today’s health-conscious shoppers, who welcome any relief from the arduous task of reading product label after product label trying to make healthy selections?
They’re about to find out at the Fort Meade Commissary, Md., where the Defense Commissary Agency is helping its patrons stay fit and healthy – a big part of military life – through the food choices they make.
“We’re creating a gluten-free section and rearranging some of the Fort Meade grocery department lineup to make it easier to spot the ‘Better for You’ products, as well as organic/natural product offerings that we’ve had in our commissaries worldwide for many years,” said Randy Chandler, DeCA’s director of sales.
The Fort Meade product rearrangement is expected to be complete in July. Commissaries have led the way in providing healthy choices that promote both troop and family readiness for years, Chandler added.
This latest initiative will be an integral part of the Agency’s continued support of DOD’s Healthy Base Initiative. Plans are to roll out similar arrangements later this year to commissaries at Fort Bragg, N.C., Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and March Air Reserve Base, Calif. HBI is a year-long demonstration project under the Defense Department’s Operation Live Well program to improve the health and wellness of service members and their families.
Chandler used two words, “integrate and segregate,” to describe the effort. Its purpose is to make it easier to spot products lower in calories, which are the primary BFY criteria. The agency uses lower calorie criteria established by the Hudson Institute, an independent policy research organization, whose standards have been incorporated into HBI. Two other criteria are included: sugar is less than 10 grams per serving in breakfast cereals, and saturated fat in any product is less than seven grams per serving.
“Better For You” items are integrated in the products customers see as they course down the aisles. Our new product arrangement will segregate them out of the mix so that customers can easily identify them,” Chandler said. “Go down the cereal aisle, and there will be the BFY products alongside the other cereal selections. That scenario will repeat itself down the aisles of other food products where applicable.”
Displays of BFY products at the ends of aisles and at the checkout stands are also in the mix as ways to increase customer awareness, which is also part of the agency’s effort, according to Army Col. Michael Buley, DeCA’s director of public health and safety who serves as the agency’s HBI liaison.
“Shoppers generally know about the health benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables,” Buley said. “We’ve always been a popular fresh produce purveyor, and increasing produce sales is one of our goals along with growing our Better For You segment, so our objectives already lined up nicely with HBI.”
Rogers Campbell, executive director of the agency’s Sales, Marketing and Policy Group, noted that the effort involves input from sources inside and outside of DeCA. DeCA’s industry partners, are providing product merchandising expertise, while, through HBI, the agency is tapping the expertise of the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab.
“We’re drawing on the best that the grocery industry has to offer to make commissary shopping fit the needs of our patron base, and being physically fit and healthy is a major component of military service,” said Campbell, who served in the Army. “As the provider of the commissary benefit DeCA is taking the initiative through this effort to help make it easier for our patrons to reach their health and fitness goals.”

7 Things to Buy in May

05/21/2014 By Military Shoppers

May is a great time to take advantage of deep discounts. If you’re in the market for any of these 7 things make sure  you get them at a steal this month.

Mattresses

Need a reason to get a new mattress?

Need a reason to get a new mattress?

May is the best month to buy a mattress. If yours is 8 years or older, it’s time to get a new one. There’s a big secret when it comes to buying a mattress too…you don’t have to pay the price listed. That’s right, it’s haggle time. Just as you can talk your way into a better deal on a car, you can sweet talk the sales guy into a true deal on a mattress that is already discounted. Make sure you shop around first before forking out your hard earned dough though.

New Car

We all secretly covet a new car. You see ‘the one’ pass you on the highway and wish you were in the driver’s seat. Stop day dreaming and pay attention to the road! Now go buy your own car and let someone else drool over yours. First, make sure you get a good deal. A new ride is even sweeter when you’ve gotten it for a steal. Dealers are trying to clear out this year’s models to make room for the next so now’s the time to shop. How do you know you’re getting a good deal though? As with any big item, it’s all about research.

Vacation Packages

None wants to pay full price for a vacation. Plan ahead and take advantage of discounts this May. Everything from wedding packages, airline tickets and condo rentals to airfare upgrades and spa treatments are on sale. Booking online will get you the best price. For flights and hotels, Friday and Sunday are the most expensive days so try to avoid them.

Digital Cameras

With the upcoming vacation season, cameras will be on deep discount. Check out the camera at a retailer then go online and see if you can get a better deal. Some stores price match. The military exchange does and remember, there’s no sales tax.

Camping Gear

Planning a big family camping trip this summer? Tents and other outdoor gear will be marked down now. Make sure it fits your family’s needs or is accommodating to the particular plans you have for your vacation. A good deal is great but not if your whole family isn’t going to be comfortable. Don’t forget to use a promo code if you buy online!

Patio Furniture

patiofurnituresale

Make your patio fabulous with furniture at a great price

Deals on patio furniture are in full swing this month with extreme discounts and coupons. Pay attention to circulars and online deals for special offers on full sets of outdoor furniture. If you’re shopping at Target, note that each store does NOT price match. If you need 6 cushions but one store only has 5, you won’t get the deal on the 6th if you buy it in another Target if it isn’t on sale there.

Athletic Shoes

Now is a great time to purchase running and other athletic shoes. If you told yourself you’d get into running this spring and have yet to do it, here’s a step in the right direction. Kohl’s marks down shoes as far as 80% off and on Wednesdays seniors get an additional 15% off. Surprisingly, most stores mark down shoes on Wednesdays so don’t wait for the crowds on the weekends.

Knowing there are such great deals out there during May, what items are you planning to buy this month?

Scholarship program helps students pay for college
By Kevin L. Robinson,

NOTE: To view photos of the Scholarships for Military Children luncheon held May 1 at the 2014 Commissary Roundtable event in Richmond, Va., go to https://www.flickr.com/photos/commissary/sets/72157644689221271.

FORT LEE, Va. – Six hundred children from the military community are receiving about $1.2 million in financial assistance thanks to this year’s Scholarships for Military Children program.
Since its start in 2001, the Scholarships for Military Children program has awarded about $14.5 million in scholarships to more than 8,000 children of active duty, Guard and Reserve, and retired service members worldwide. This year, the scholarship amount per recipient increased from $1,500 to $2,000.
The Defense Commissary Agency participates in the program by accepting applications from eligible children and submitting their packages to Scholarship Managers, a national, nonprofit, scholarship management services organization.
DeCA Director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu thanked the agency’s industry partners, who help bolster the scholarship program with their corporate donations, at the 2014 Commissary Roundtable event on May 1 in Richmond, Va.
“You’ve always put your best foot forward when taking care of military families,” Jeu said to an audience of commissary employees and industry members. “Scholarships [for Military Children] are one of those examples of supporting military families. … I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support.”
Commissary vendors, manufacturers, brokers, suppliers and the general public fund the program through donations. And, all donations are applied solely to funding the scholarships, said Jim Weiskopf, vice president of Fisher House Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists family members with temporary lodging when they visit hospitalized service members. The Fisher House Foundation sponsors the administration of the scholarships program.
“[The scholarship] is an investment in education; it is an investment in military quality of life; it is an investment in our future,” Weiskopf said during the scholarship luncheon at the Commissary Roundtable.
Two of this year’s 600 scholarship recipients, Caitlin Truong and Luis Beltran, spoke during the luncheon.
Truong, the daughter of an Army reservist, is a senior at Clover Hill High School in Midlothian, Va. During her high school years, she has been the captain of the dance team and president of the French Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Tri-M music honor society and Clover Hill’s nationally ranked mixed show choir. She has also volunteered more than 400 hours at her local YMCA. Truong will attend Virginia Tech University in the fall, majoring in business.
“I’m truly honored to be one of this year’s recipients for the military children program scholarships,” Truong said. “This is a way to help fund my education for the future and a path toward a good job – I’m so excited!”
Beltran, the son of an Army master sergeant, is a senior at Colonial Heights High School in Colonial Heights, Va. He is a member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society, volunteers through the Youth Advisory Council and plays on the varsity tennis team. Beltran is also the secretary of the Beta Club and Junior Optimist Octagon International Club. He will attend Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall, where he plans to major in biomedical engineering.
“This [scholarship] means I can help my parents pay for college; they’ve done so much for me that I’d like to do anything I can to help them,” Beltran said. “I am deeply honored.”
This year’s essay topic asked applicants to write about the hardships of military service aside from deploying to a war zone. Truong wrote her essay on the financial issues facing military families that result in them qualifying for assistance programs. Beltran addressed the impact of congressional budget cuts in his essay.
During the selection process, Scholarship Managers reviews the applicants’ grade-point averages, their extracurricular and volunteer activities, and their essays.

25 stores in Europe ready move to local bagged salads
By Rick Brink,
Europe Area public affairs officer

FORT LEE, Va. – Commissary shoppers in 25 stores located in Germany, England, Belgium and the Netherlands will find expanded offerings of Europe-grown Florette bagged salads beginning in April, as the Defense Commissary Agency discontinues offering the Fresh Express line at the end of March.
“It’s based on an overall market analysis evaluation,” said Norman Brown, DeCA Europe Area director. “Product freshness and product availability are key considerations for bagged salads, and the switchover to local suppliers will give our customers the freshness and availability they expect.”
The Florette bagged salad line has been sold in DeCA commissaries for many years. Europe Area contracting personnel took steps earlier this year alerting suppliers of Florette products about the need to increase production to meet customer demand.
This increase in production will ensure product availability in DeCA commissaries in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and England. Commissaries south of the Alps are not affected by this change because they do not carry then Fresh Express line, and they will continue to receive bagged salads from their local suppliers.
“Our commissaries pride themselves on bringing a taste of home to authorized patrons stationed overseas, and bagged salads are no exception,” Brown said. “With this initiative, we are going to be able to expand the number of line items available while maintaining our commitment to freshness.”

7 Ways You Sabotage Your Morning – And 1 Way To Stop

04/14/2014 By Military Shoppers

signs of depression for new military spousesI think we all know about the benefits of breakfast – but sometimes the benefit of those extra 15 minutes of sleep are so easy to put higher on the morning priority list. So, for this list post, I decided to write about the bad things that happen when I don’t have breakfast, instead of the good things that can happen to you if you do have breakfast. Maybe that will have more of an impact…

When I don’t eat breakfast…

1…I get a massive headache and it is always a surprise…always.

2….The small things bother me…like dog kibble on the ground or long lines at the grocery store.

3…Small tasks seem insurmountable. The pile of dishes, the mountain of laundry, the pages of e-mails, and long list of voicemails I have to sift through.

4…The kids are louder – exponential decibels louder.

5…I don’t have enough energy to work out.

6…I eat more at dinner.

7…I can’t make up my workout because I ate too much at dinner.

Stop Chasing the Ideal Breakfast

Stop Chasing The Ideal Breakfast

Stop Chasing the Ideal Breakfast

Not having breakfast in the morning messes with my entire day, and yet it is still really hard for me to learn my lesson. I want so desperately to have that picturesque breakfast in the morning where the family is gathered around the table with steamy eggs, bacon, maybe a muffin or two.

But that breakfast is not realistic for most of us crazy busy Americans…and honestly, bacon and muffins aren’t that great for us either.

What IS manageable is cereal. Cereal with some extra nutritional boosts:

Start Your Day With A Smile

Start Your Day With A Smile

Honey Nut Cheerios or Cinnamon Toast Crunch with a spoonful of milled flaxseed and milk. I’m a little addicted to my Cheerios (I’m eating a bowl now…it #mustbethehoney). I like adding milled flaxseed to food wherever I can since it adds extra fiber, iron, and omega-3 acids…and it’s easy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drC2fA86Nc4

You can get the big boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios and Cinnamon Toast Crunch at the commissary for cheap. Plus cereal doubles as breakfast and late-night snack.

Want to know what else you can do with Honey Nut Cheerios? Check out the cheerios recipes page and get inspired.

Celebrate the “Month of the Military Child” Photo Contest

04/02/2014 By Military Shoppers

Month of the Military ChildNobody’s lives are affected more by the intricacies of military life than military kids. They grow up in this subculture of society that makes them so resilient, yet so fragile to experiences that other children might never have to face until they move away from home to start their adult lives.

Loss is something that military children experience continuously, whether it is the loss of friends, loss of teachers, or the temporary and sometimes permanent loss of parents. They go through more in their childhood than most adults go through in a lifetime.

MilitaryShoppers.com  wants to celebrate the military child this April and give one child the chance to win a $100 gift certificate to Toys R Us.

It is very simple to enter. Military parents, families, or friends, just send a photo of your military child(ren) to bschmalz@militarymedia.com and a random winner will be selected for the prize of a $100 Toys R Us gift card.

Submissions need to include:

  • Name of person submitting photo
  • Installation
  • Branch of service
  • Age(s) of child(ren)

Rules:

  • Children must be between the ages of newborn-18 years
  • Pictures must be received by May 1st, 2014.
  • Winner will be selected at random on May 5th, 2014
  • Winner will be posted to MilitaryShoppers Facebook page, MilitaryShoppers Blog and MilitaryShoppers.com
  • One photo per entrant
  • Multiple entrants will not be accepted
  • Photo must be submitted by entrant who possesses a valid military ID card (Active Duty, Veteran, Retiree, Reserve, Guard or family member of the aforementioned categories)
  • Entrant (not those within the photo) must be 18 years of age or older
  • Winner will be notified by e-mail
  • No purchase necessary to win

Healthy After School Snacks for Kids

02/25/2014 By Military Shoppers

after school snacks, healthy snacks. kids snacks

As a mom, you are always looking for healthy foods for your children. Finding healthy after school snacks that your children enjoy can sometimes be a challenge. You want to find healthy snacks that they will actually look forward to eating. You just need something to fill them up enough to get through until dinnertime without making them too full to not want to eat the dinner.

You might want to try homemade granola bars to start. You can put what you want in them and can create a yummy snack. You can get really creative with your ingredients.

If you can create fun snacks, your kids will be more likely to eat them. Ants on a log is a great choice. Take some celery sticks and put peanut butter on them. Add raisins for the ants and you have a cute little snack.

Another great idea is to make muffins that your kids will enjoy. You can find a healthy recipe and make up a bunch of them to freeze. You can create a variety of different types. Blueberry, cranberry and banana bread are great choices.

healthy snacks, after school snacks, snacks for kids

Take a plate and make it colorful. Add fruits, veggies and something they enjoy. You can make the plate before they get home from school so it is easy to give it to them right away. You can also have your children help you in preparing their snacks. Children are more likely to eat what they help make themselves.

Other great ideas for healthy snacks for kids are carrot sticks, apple slices, whole-grain bread, grapes, orange slices, cherries, graham crackers and milk, and homemade potato chips.

If you are looking to replace more sugary snacks you can make healthy peanut butter cookies, homemade jello out of juice, yogurt or homemade popsicles made out of fruit and yogurt. These snacks would be great for your little sweet tooth.

As you can see, there are a lot of great foods to choose from when it comes to finding healthy foods to serve to your children.

Do you have any healthy after school snacks that you love to serve your kids?
