Back to School Commissary Specials on Sale in August

08/03/2015 By Julie Provost

August is here. School is starting back for a lot of people and summer is wrapping up. Might be time to host a back-to-school barbecue or get started on your kid’s lunches.

When we think about going back to school, we need to think about breakfast. Luckily the commissary has a few foods we can stock up on to eat in the morning.

If your house is like our house, school mornings can be quite busy and having quick meal choices before they go off to school is a plus.

Fiber One cereals are on sale for just $2.49. If your kids are older, they can even pour their own bowl making life a little easier for you in the mornings. This is a great item to stock up on.

You can also find the Pillsbury Toaster Scrambles and Toaster Strudel are on sale for $1.50 for a 4 or 6 pack. Click here a $0.50 coupon for Pillsbury Toaster Scrambles and Toaster Strudel. These can be something you can make and even take in the car with you. I am not a big fan of breakfast but foods I can stick in the toaster and then grab and good work best for me.

You can also find Nature’s Valley granola bars on sale which are good in the mornings but also a nice choice for lunches. You can download a $0.75 coupon for Nature Valley’s granola bars for extra savings.

Our house is really into yogurt, at any time of the day. Yoplait happens to be on sale, $0.50 for a 6-oz container. Don’t forget to combine this savings with a $1-off-of-10 coupon. Stock up on these to have a snack available for after school or something to eat in the morning with your coffee.

Speaking of coffee, you can also find International Delight Iced Coffee drinks on sale for $2.89. Pick up a few of these to have on hand for your early mornings or even afternoon pick-me-ups.

Moving on to lunch and dinner, some nights you don’t want to cook a huge meal. Especially with fall sports starting up. You also don’t want to depend on your local fast food restaurants. You can find a good deal on Wishbone dressings in August. They are on sale 2 for $3. You can stock up for the next few months. Buy a few different types of dressings and each member of your family can customise their salad their way. You could also plan to make salad in a jar to take to work with you.

You can also find Horizon Organic Classic Mac for just $0.99. I know my youngest son is a huge fan of that meal so I will probably go and stock up on a few of those for him. You can add the food to your list of easy meals to make when you have a busy evening with helping the kids with homework and getting used to the new school year.

If you are planning on one last neighborhood barbecue before Labor Day, pick up some discounted chips. Family-sized Lay’s chips for just $2 and Party size Ruffles and Tostitos for $2.98. You can also add some of the Dunkin Hines Perfect Size Chocolate Cake and Frosting mix. Make a yummy dessert for your guests to enjoy.

We can’t forget about our furry friends. Some Purina items (cat litter, dog and cat food and treats) are on sale until August 15. I know my Hound Dog will love the doggy treats they have.

When you go to the commissary, don’t forget your digital coupons. You will be able to save even more when you use them on products at the store.

Be Food Safe When Grilling This Summer

07/20/2015 By Michelle Volkmann

Grilling dinner is a fast and easy way to get food on the table during the hot summer months. But while serving dinner, you want to take precautions to make sure that you aren’t accidentally serving a foodborne illness to your family members and friends.

The Be Food Safe program aims to prevent foodborne illnesses caused from improper food handling through an education and awareness campaign. The program was created through a collaboration of several government agencies–U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Foodborne illnesses such as salmonella, E. coli and listeria are all potential party crashers if people don’t pay heed to proper food handling,” said Chris Wicker, DeCA’s public health advisor in a Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) press release.

DeCA wants its patrons to know that these “potential party crashers” can be easily prevented with proper food safety. Remember those food safety rules from home economics class? Here’s a quick refresher.

5 Food Safety Tips You Need to Remember When Grilling This Summer

1. Start Clean. The first step in food safety is working with clean hands on a clean surface. Always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (hum the Happy Birthday song in your head) before handling food. Always. The Be Food Safe program also recommends cleaning your grill before preparation. When was the last time you cleaned your grill?

2. Keep Marinating Meat in the Fridge. The Be Food Safe program advises that “any food that is marinating should be covered and kept in a refrigerator until ready to cook.” Don’t thaw meat on the kitchen counter. Another food safety no-no is reusing marinade containing raw meat.

3. Don’t Cut Corners When Cooking. Grilled meat must be thoroughly cooked before consuming. Don’t try to rush the process and don’t serve food that isn’t completely cooked. Unsure if your hamburgers are ready? Always use a meat thermometer and then compare the interior temperature reading with this handy dandy chart from FoodSafety.gov.

4. Eat Hot Off the Grill. Keep the food hot by wrapping it in aluminium foil and placing it in a insulated container. The goal is to eat food that is 140 degrees or warmer. Once the food is taken off the grill, be sure to eat it within 2 hours. The Be Food Safe program recommends that you eat hot take-out food within 2 hours of purchase.

5. Keep the Cold Side Dishes and Desserts Cool. Food safety isn’t only for the person manning the grill. Keep those chilly side dishes, such as potato salad and macaroni salad, cool. The Be Food Safe program says that these types of salads and certain desserts need a constant temperature at or below 40 degrees. Always put them on ice inside a cooler when traveling to a picnic and keep them in the cooler when you aren’t eating.

Deli, Bakery, Sushi Bar Back at Commissaries This Month

07/13/2015 By Kimber Green

Commissary bakeries, delis and sushi bars on U.S. installations that were closed over the last few months are finally reopening.

Nayyarsons Corporation held the contract for these, but DeCA (Defense Commissary Agency) canceled two contracts and did not renew one due to performance-related issues. Twenty-two commissaries were initially affected by this with another 22 shortly after that. Some bakeries, delis and sushi bars were temporarily closed while new contractors were sought.

Product shortages were one of the main issues DeCA repeatedly faced with Nayyarsons Corporation’s performance. The company was given a chance to rectify problems, but nothing it did resolved the shortcomings. DeCA operates a chain of commissaries around the world offering groceries to military service members, retirees and their families. The commissary is an important and valued benefit that many rely on. DeCA chose to end business with this company in order to find and maintain quality goods and services from a company it could rely on.

Military Deli and Bakery Services Inc. (MDBS) has been contracted to meet these needs. They already have contracts to manage the same sections in 72 commissaries. Most of those commissaries are on military installations out west, in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Texas and in Georgia. Military Deli and Bakery Services will now have contracts to cover 116 commissaries.

Since the end of February, most commissaries have only had limited deli-bakery functions. DeCA temporarily hired former employees of Nayyarsons Corporation as government employees in order to keep service going. Other patrons, such as those at Fort Carson, were surprised to find their deli closed.

After negotiations, a contract has been signed and families are once again seeing lights on behind the counters in commissaries across the country. DeCA expects sushi bars to be operating once again by the end of this month for those stores that previously had them.

On July 1, 2015, American military commissaries celebrated their 148th anniversary. Shopping has changed dramatically in that time, but one thing has stayed the same, they still sell groceries at cost. DeCA wants to ensure the legacy continues and patrons will be able to purchase quality goods as one of the key benefits service members and families receive.

Hopefully, Military Deli and Bakery Services is the right company to help DeCA keep on track so that we can keep shopping.

Do you use the deli and bakery at your military commissary? How has your grocery shopping changed in recent months?

Guard, Reservists Can Shop at Commissary On-Site Sales This Summer

06/15/2015 By Michelle Volkmann

One of the challenges of National Guard life is not living near a military commissary.

Since November 2003, members of the Guard and Reserve–including the Ready Reserve, Selected Reserve, Individual Ready Reserve, Inactive National Guard, Guard and Reserve retirees and their authorized family members–have had unlimited access to commissaries.

But just because they have the access, doesn’t mean they are always able to use it. Some Guard and Reserve families are not able to use this benefit because of the location of commissaries in relation to where they live.

That’s why DeCA created the Guard/Reserve On-site Sales Program. The Guard/Reserve On-site Sales Program provides the commissary benefit to National Guard and Reserve members and their families that live in areas that are not close to an existing commissary store.

We bring the benefit directly to you at these sales which provide patrons savings of 30% or more; the same as active duty military and their families who shop the commissaries on a regular basis.

—Commissaries.com

How does it work?

National Guard or Reserve units with at least 150 members stationed in an area can have a on-site sale, if the host commissary agrees. The host commissary selects the items for the sale. In some cases, patrons may pre-order products and then pay for those items at the on-site sale.

How can my unit get an on-site sale?

Contact your unit representative. This person can request the on-site sale through the nearest commissary. In the past, the commissary has brought the items to a warehouse for sale on a weekend.

Here is the 2015 schedule for on-site sales:

Camping is one of my favorite summer activities and there are some great powerbuys on camping treats this month.

My husband and I put a handful of Nature Valley Crunchy Granola Bars in our hiking pack. Right now, a box of 12 is $1.89 and it includes Oats ‘n Honey, Peanut Butter or the Variety Pack. You can combine this sale with a $0.50 coupon to save even more money.

For those that like crumbles of granola better than the bars, Cascadian Farm Organic Protein Granola is $2.25. They have a tasty selection, Dark Chocolate Coconut, Apple Crisp or Granola Berry Cobbler.

Cost-Saving Proposal Would Make Commissary Employees NAF Instead of GS

05/25/2015 By Kimber Green

Just when we’ve gotten used to something in our military life being stable, the Military Compensation and Retirement Modernization Commission (MCRMC) throws us another curve ball. As military families, we have come to accept change, but there are things we just don’t like having messed with. The commissary is one of those things.

Congress charges the MCRMC to review military benefits and make suggestions on how the government can modernize the military compensation and retirement system. Recommendation 9 in their report is to combine the commissaries and exchanges, theorizing that it will ensure better access and savings for military families. That in itself is a huge topic of debate.

A particular component of that recommendation is that DeCA, Defense Commissary Agency, employees be converted from GS (General Schedule) federal employees to NAF (non-appropriated fund) in order to reduce staffing costs by an estimated $110 million.

commissary

What does that really mean? An estimated 16,000 DeCA employees will be biting their nails waiting to find out how their salary will be affected. Currently, DeCA receives government funding and their pay scales are different, and usually higher, than NAF counterparts such as the Exchange. According to Beth Moten, the legislative and political director for the employee union, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), every DeCA employee will see a pay cut of at least 10% based on the scale differences. She gives an eye opener of an example:

The starting salary for a NAF employee commissary cashier in Charleston, South Carolina, for example, would be 47 percent below that of the current starting salary of a DeCA cashier in the GS system.

Need actual numbers to shake things up for you? Entry-level cashiers in Nevada commissaries are GS-3 employees earning at least $25,000. If their jobs are changed to NAF, their pay would line up with minimum wage, which I Nevada is $8.25 an hour making their salary now only $17,160 a year. They would be doing the exact same job for almost $8,000 less a year.

How would your job satisfaction and job performance change with an $8,000 pay cut?

To make things worse, NAF employees also have a different health care package that has fewer options, the employee retirement contribution is lower and the retirement age is higher than GS workers. Changing their status to NAF will also make their jobs less dependable as they would now be vulnerable to formal reduction in work forces and the possibility of their job being outsourced.

This all sounds terrible, right? You bet. The strain of this change won’t just make an impact on DeCA workers; it will also make a difference in your shopping and savings. If the commissary no longer receives appropriated funds, they will have to increase the price of goods to cover salaries.

In a recent government survey, 92% of respondents say they have shopped in the commissary. What percentage do you think will still be shopping at the commissary if prices are up and savings are down?

This change only looks good in the eye of the government. They would be saving a huge amount of money, but DeCA employees and commissary patrons would be feeling the brunt of it.

This is just a recommendation by MCRMC and hopefully Congress has not been taken in by shiny numbers but will see that military benefits like the commissary are something families deserve to have left alone. We need something stable in this crazy, ever changing life we all lead.

Keep the commissary the way it is and let families focus on more important things.

What do you think of this proposal? What would you say to the MCRMC or Congress?

Memorial Day Savings This Month at Your Commissary

04/29/2015 By Rachel Tringali Marston

May is my absolute favorite month! Not only is it my birth month, it is also the unofficial start to summer. Our community pool opens up Memorial Day weekend (YAY!) and outdoor gatherings become a regular occurrence.

It can be said that along with the weather, the commissary deals are heating up too! In honor of National Military Appreciation Month, they have upped their game with lots of great specials throughout the month aimed to help military families get ready for barbecues, pool parties or any other family get-togethers.

Who doesn’t love a good backyard picnic? Add the ideal outdoor dining side dish to your menu with a tasty pasta salad. Betty Crocker’s Suddenly Pasta Salad (Ceasar, Classic or Ranch & Bacon) is only $0.98. Buy 2 and you can save $.50 with this coupon. It’s a great make-ahead meal and can be refrigerated until it’s time to eat.

Another great addition to any meal outside is a delicious pickle. Vlasic® Spears (24 oz.) are 2 for $3. For those who like to add a pickle topping to their hot dogs, Vlasic Relish (10 oz.) is $0.98.

Stock up on great finger grabbing snacks like Ruffles Potato Chips (Original or Cheddar & Sour Cream, $2.50), Tostitos Tortilla Chips (Cantina Traditional or Thin & Crispy, $2; Restaurant Style or Scoops, $2.50) or finally, Lay’s Chips (Baked, Classic or Wavy Original, $2). Don’t forget to include your favorite dip into the mix.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m from Texas, so I know that no awesome barbecue is complete without sweet tea and lemonade. Sometimes a get-together is quickly arranged. As a result, you have no time to brew a batch of tea or squeeze a bunch of lemons! In those instances, I love grabbing a refreshing jug of pre-made tea and lemonade. I’m excited that Gold Peak’s Iced Tea Diet or Sweet Tea (59 oz.) is $1.39 and Minute Maid Light Lemonade (59 oz.) is 2 for $3.

Also, I don’t know about you, but I tend to stick with disposable plates and cups for most outdoor dining situations. It makes clean-up a breeze. Several of Hefty’s great products are on sale for $1.50 this month. The sale items include: Everyday Soak Proof bowls or plates (50 ct.), Deluxe Extra Strong & Deep plates (24 ct.) and Ultimate Easy Grip 18 oz. cups (30 ct.).  They have a good selection of trash bags discounted too. Ultimate Flex Scent Free or Clean Burst (38 ct.) or Odor Block scent free or lavender vanilla (45 ct.) are $4.99 a package.

Don’t forget to pair these great discounts with coupons from coupons.com.

This month, Neutrogena products are on special. Pamper yourself with a wide range of their offers! I’m a huge fan of their Oil-Free Moisturizer for sensitive skin. They also have a version with SPF that’s great for the sunny months ahead. Both are just $6.67.

Here are some more Neutrogena specials:

  • Deep Clean (Facial and Cream Cleanser or Gentle Scrub), $3.41
  • Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover, $4.18
  • Excellent for travel: Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes Refill Pack, $2.97

Commissaries React to Blue Bell Creameries Recall

04/22/2015 By Military Shoppers

According to a press release on April 20, 2015: “Blue Bell Ice Cream of Brenham, Texas, is voluntarily recalling all of its products currently on the market made at all of its facilities including ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

Consequently, DeCA has notified all of its stores with the updated information pertaining to this recall.  Per Commissaries.com, if at any point a commissary has a recalled product in its inventory, the product is immediately removed from the commissary shelves.

If you think you may have purchased a product affected by this recall, you are advised not to consume the product.

For more information pertaining to this recall and your commissary, visit Commissaries.com.

To find out more about this voluntary recall and read their press release, visit Blue Bell Creameries website.

DeCA Says Pacific Commissaries Will Return to Normal, But Not for Several Months

04/17/2015 By Rachel Tringali Marston

Are you stationed overseas? Have you been feeling a bit frustrated with the lack of grocery goods at your installation’s commissary?

Finally, military families stationed at OCONUS locations, particularly in the Pacific, will start seeing commissary shelves fill up again because of an agreement reached between the appropriate groups responsible for shipping goods for the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA). The agreement made with the Pacific Maritime Association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union should be the start of getting the whole shipment process back on track.

Despite the resolution, DeCA has warned military families that it would take some time to smooth out delivery issues and allow overseas commissary inventories to return to 100 percent.

You should still experience some lag time, if you’re located in countries like Japan, South Korea, Guam and Hawaii.

How long exactly will the hold-up last? Hopefully, it will only take 3 to 4 months to get back to full inventory levels.

What caused the problem? The problem began when union disputes occurred with principal parties as well as computer mishaps that caused a breakdown in critical shipment deliveries. As a result, it caused major delays in supplying OCONUS commissaries.

Yikes!

Luckily, DeCA has been doing everything in their power since the delivery disruption, which was apparent starting December 2014 and continued into the New Year. Around that time, DeCA started using U.S Transportation Command to aid in shipping important groceries that would be difficult to find otherwise, including dairy products and certain meats. Those products are airlifted to the needed locations, which will continue until the inventory issues are straightened out.

According to a news release, DeCA Director and CEO Joseph H. Jeu said “we will continue to monitor and manage closely our supply situation in the Pacific and as always, our mission is to ensure our military and their families in the Pacific have access to full commissary benefit.”
