7 Indoor Activities to Wear Out Your Active Dog This Winter

01/16/2015 By Michelle Volkmann

Poor Fido. It’s freezing outside. This time of year it seems like the entire nation is under Jack Frost’s finger. The bitter wind. The dropping temperatures. The snow and ice. During the entire month of January, I prefer to sit at home, cuddled under a blanket drinking tea and reading a book. I don’t go outside unless it is absolutely necessary.

Unfortunately for the active dogs in our families, the sedentary nature of winter doesn’t comply with most dogs’ must-be-outside-and-run desires.  Depending on the breed and the age, they need to burn off energy every day. Canine experts agree that pent-up energy can lead to destructive or nervous behaviors from our pets. Ideally we would take our dogs out for a walk for at least 20 minutes every day, even during the winter months. But with below freezing temperatures, you need to consider your pet’s safety and may need to reduce their outside time this month. Here are 7 ideas to keep your dog active inside when it’s too cold to play outside.

7 Indoor Activities to Wear Out Your Active Dog This Winter

Some days it is simply too cold to go outside and play. How do you keep your dog active when it’s stuck inside during the winter?

7 Indoor Activities to Wear Out Your Active Dog This Winter

  1. Build an Inside Obstacle Course. Dogs need to run or at least move quickly for a few minutes every day. Without buying special equipment, you can use household items to challenge your dog’s agility. Have your dog jump over a broom stick and run up and down the stairs. Drape a blanket over a set of chairs to make a “tunnel” for your dog to crawl through. Feel free to test out different challenges. Don’t make the obstacle course impossible for your dog, but you also don’t want it to be too easy. The key is for them to release energy and have fun. Always end the obstacle course on a positive note.
  2. Play Tug-O-War. For the well trained dog, good old fashioned tug-o-war can be a simple way to play together in the living room. I know my brother-in-law does this nightly with his Boxer while watching television.
  3. Schedule Puppy Play Dates. Saturday snowstorm? Invite a neighbor to come over with her dog. The stimulus of another dog (as long as you know that they will play well together) can be another way to release energy without a lot of physical activity. As an added bonus, you get to catch up on the neighborhood gossip over a mug of hot chocolate.
  4. Challenge Them with Puzzle Feeders. The Dane Dame has a wonderful post on ideas for inexpensive DIY puzzle feeders. This moderate level puzzle feeder uses tennis balls, a muffin tin and dog treats.
  5. Invite Children into Your Home. You know your dog best. If you don’t have children, but your dog is well behaved around little ones and enjoys their constant squeals, invite a neighbor and her 4-year-old over to play. After this play date, I guarantee your dog and her preschooler will both need a long winter’s nap. It’s also a good opportunity to teach children how to behave around other people’s pets.
  6. Play Sniff and Find.  This exercise is more mental than physical, but still your dog and her nose will love it. Instead of simply giving your dog a treat, hide their favorite treat under 1 of 3 containers. Don’t let your dog see you do this. Shuffle the containers around and then call your dog. Encourage your puppy to find it. Once they find it, they get to eat their prize– the treat! Once your dog gets the hang of this game, you can play the hide and seek game anywhere in the house. (Again, the stairs are your friend this January. Hide the treat upstairs while your dog is downstairs.) Just give the command “find it” to let your dog know when they can begin their search.
  7. Try Indoor Fetch. Intense indoor fetch with a tennis ball is the easiest way to burn off some energy with your dog. Try different types of balls to keep this activity interesting for your dog.

Stocking Stuffer Ideas for Your Family Pet

12/15/2014 By Julie Provost

Have you gotten all of your Christmas shopping done yet? We added a dog to our family this past year and I have been excited to shop for her as well. There are a lot of great items out there to put in your pets stocking. So when you are out shopping this year, don’t forget about your furry friends.

Here are some great ideas for stocking stuffers for your favorite family pet.gifts for dogs

If you have a dog in your home, you want them to be a part of your Christmas celebration. Put some of these items in their stocking and they will thank you forever.

  • Purina Beggin’ Strips Dog Snacks. These are a great treat you can put in your dog’s stocking. You might be buying treats anyway but having a little something extra can be a lot of fun. These snacks come in bacon, bacon and cheese, bacon and beef and applewood smoked.
  • A brand new collar. Let’s face it, a dog’s collar gets worn and it is nice to be able to replace it. It is perfect for a stocking stuffer.
  • Chew toys. Our little girl is getting a few of these. You can find them for any size dog and some you can even put treats in. Our girl is getting one that looks like a dinosaur but you can find them in a lot of different shapes.
  • A new stuffed animal- If you have ever been to a pet store you know about all the different types of stuffed animals you can get for your dog. Pick out one or two new ones for the stocking. These toys are a lot of fun and you can get them in different sizes too depending on how big your dog is.

If you have a cat in your home, you might want to pick up some of these fun items to spoil your furry little friend.

  • Purina Friskies Party Mix. These are like a party in a box for your kitty cat. You can find them in three different types, party mix crunch, party mix puffs and party mix naturals.stocking stuffers for cats
  • Catnip filled toys. When I was younger I had a cat and I remember getting him catnip filled toys for Christmas. Most cats love these and you can find them in many different types and styles.
  • Cat danglers. Cats love these and you can find some great ones that will entertain them for hours. You can roll them up and stick them in the stocking. Get a couple of different ones for different types of entertainment.
  • A kitty garden. This is a pretty neat gift for a cat. You can grow your own tiny garden for your cat. They can nibble on this grass instead of something else. It is just a small patch of grass your cats will go nuts after.

As you can see there are a lot of great toys and treats you can get for your pet. Whether you go with something from Purina, a fun new toy or something more practical. Don’t forget your family pet when you are out Christmas shopping. They will love you for it.

5 Ways to Keep Your Cat Healthy

05/13/2014 By Amiyrah Martin

Woman with sleeping Cat

Spend 5 minutes cuddling your cat daily.

Cats are well known for being the extra cushion on the couch. The sedentary lifestyle of a pet cat can be cute to look at, but not very good for their health. Cats need to be more active to attain a longer lifespan.

Here are 5 ways to keep your cat healthy in less than 15 minutes.

Reduce Stress

Even your cat can get stressed. For most felines, stress is created when there is a drastic change within the home, like moving, rearranging furniture, a new family member, or even losing a family member. When I deployed, my husband noticed a very big change in my cat’s behavior. His mom was missing for several months, and he had trouble eating, playing and keeping on weight. You can alleviate this by paying a little more attention to your pet. Set aside part of each day for cuddling and one-on-one time.

Exercise in the Evenings

Cats are nocturnal animals and thrive in the early evening, which is technically morning for them. Create a play routine for them: break out the cat toys after supper and play with your furry baby for at least 15 minutes. They will enjoy the attention and will essentially have their “morning workout” at the same time. Just like humans, an exercise routine will reap great benefits when it comes to the health of your pet.

What’s your cat’s play routine?

Room to Roam

While cats are great apartment pets, they still need ample room to sprint when the feeling hits them. Like felines in the savanna, the more room your cat has to roam, the better it will feel. Keep clutter to a minimum within the household, and keep your furniture as minimal as possible as well. If you would like to take it another step, place thick, reinforced shelves on walls near your windows. Cats love to climb and perch. What’s good for the cat is good for the owner; an uncluttered house will boost your health and demeanor.

Groom Daily

We take grooming for granted when it comes to cats. They seem to love to clean and groom themselves multiple times a day. But all of that grooming can produce hairballs, which can cause sickness, vomiting, and problems with their immune system. Give your cat a brush or combing session each day. Try to do this after dinner, but before playtime. A reluctant cat will associate grooming with play and will be more willing to let you brush him. Want to go the extra mile? Brush their teeth with kitty toothpaste as well. Dental hygiene is very important for cats of all ages.

Groom your cat daily to keep her healthy.

Pick the Right Food and Ration

This is the key to keeping your pet as healthy as possible. Invest in quality cat food, like Purina and be sure to read the ingredients list. Cats are predators and carnivores, so protein should be one of the top ingredients listed. Also, check the recommended serving size of the food for either dry or wet. Ration these servings to help your cat stay at a healthy weight. Always keep fresh water available for them to have at any time.

Are you a pet lover?

May is National Pet Month and Purina is giving away up to $100,000 in fun prizes to those of us with an affinity for our furry friends. For every person that plays their instant win game, Purina will donate $0.10 to Adopt-a-Pet.com. Check out Paw It Forward to win. Good luck!
