Bessie Coleman – 1892-1926. Coleman was an aviation pioneer in more ways than one. She not only took to the skies before Amelia Earhart, Coleman was also an African-American. While she was passionate about wanting to fly, no one in the United States would train her, so she followed her dream to France, where she was trained to fly a biplane. She was the first African-American woman to earn an international aviation license and a pilot’s license. Commercial flights were still a long way off, so she trained as a stunt flier and became a media sensation, her skills exceptional, her maneuvers daring. |
