I have enyoyed my time at Fort Irwin. It is very small but everyone seems to be fairly friendly. I always was the one to say hello first though. There is 2 gyms on post, one is mainly for enlisted but you are still welcome to go. The other is much less busy and located in the fitness conection building. There is things for kids to do there as well. There is a nice track with grass nearby to take the kids while you walk or jog. The px is small but I have been able to get all of our necesities there. The comissary is moderate-small. Again I have been able to make do. Barstow is the closest town (40 min.) Thereis nice outlet shopping in Barstow though. I've been to the Coach outlet, Guess, Gap,and Osh Kosh. They all had quite a bit to offer. Our housing is nice even though it is older. We got housing 2wks after we got here. Probably because my husband was in Korea for a year. Others we have talked to got housing within 2 months or less.
The road coming in to base is VERY dangerous The crosses won't lie! A base will only be what you and your families make of it. Best wishes. Thank you to all of you that serve in the military encluding all the wives. ( sometimes that is the hardest job to do)
